Action!! PSP Movies Are Go

Japanese site rolls out downloadable PSP movies, starting Christmas Eve

If you’re lucky enough to have your hands on Sony’s PSP you’ll be able to start watching downloadable movies on it from Friday. With not a UMD in sight (Sony hasn’t announced its plans for releasing movies on the system’s proprietary format yet) Japanese website PDA Cinema Contents will be offering downloadable flicks for your PSP from Friday - Christmas Eve.

The MPEG-4 video files are formatted especially for the PSP’s movie playback functionality. You’ll be able to download them via your PC to a PSP memory stick and then watch them on the move.

No word on the movie’s running length or the size of the file will be offered by the site until Friday, but the downloads will cost between £1.50 and £2. Sounds like a good deal to us.

Unfortunately, it’s unlikely that the initial line-up will float your cinematic boat, no matter how eclectic your tastes: chocolate@fish, Lapis Lazuli, Kanmai no Shima (God’s Dance Island) and Hidari-mimi no Yousei (The Fairy in the Left Ear) aren’t titles you’re likely to see down your local Blockbuster.

Still, indecipherable Japanese cinema aside, it’s nice to know that this kind of downloadable movie content should be easily available when the PSP launches in Europe and the US. For a taster of what we could expect check out the PDA Cinema Contents website.

Sony do not seem to have an official PSP website, at least not in English
