EU vs Microsoft
By DarthTibaultEveryone has read about it, and a lot of people seem to be glad with it. I’m not.
What am I talking about? The EU sued Microsoft because it would use it’s monopoly in operating systems so other companies wouldn’t get a chance with their products.
If you haven’t heard of it yet (where have you been?) you can read an article here or just use google.
Now excuse me for saying this, but that’s bullsh*t. They are making MS sell windows without media player or internet explorer etc. Now I wonder myself…would I buy an operating system that can’t play a simple audio or video file, can’t browse the web, or do anything else…
Now don’t get me wrong, I use Mozilla Firefox, but how would I download it if there wouldn’t be a standard browser?! What are you suing Microsoft for? For trying to make a decent and complete operating system?
I actually like Windows Media Player, it’s the best one I’ve ever seen. It’s easy, has a lot of features, has nice visualisations and works great with portable devices. If you want something else like winamp, download it!
I hope they will sell two versions: one complete one and one without any other software. Because I don’t feel like buying windows and start downloading all the software that’s missing.
That is all I wanted to say for now (I think).

In addition to lacking a copy of Windows Media Player, the new version of Windows won’t be able to do things like play a CD or MP3 file or transfer music to a portable device–at least not without additional software from another company.
Oh my God, what have they done!
“There’s things that a customer is going to expect that won’t work,” said Dave Fester, general manager of Microsoft’s Windows consumer unit, in an interview. “Customers (using) all operating systems have come to expect certain base functionality, whether it is Windows, Mac or Linux.”
That’s exacly what I’m affraid of too.
Another thing: A lot of websites have embedded elements as video files and music. Usually in wmv or mwa format. They won’t be able to do that anymore, because they won’t be sure anymore whether people have windows media player or not.

Hey for once I actually disagree with you. I think its about time microsoft scrapped their scams. I mean so many people get spyware and stuff from using IE, and believe me, you are of the few people who like windows media player! The microsoft applications built in with windows are generally useless anyway, i’ve never touched one of those cheap games that come free with it! Microsoft has serious (security) issues with its windows operating system, and I really don’t like the fact that they still distribute it with IE which is one of the main causes. By the way, i seriously don’t think Windows is a decent nor a complete operating system!
Great push from the EU! Thank you!

The issue on hand here is not, as many of you seem to be debating, the performance of the software bundled with Windows, but the fact that Microsoft has again been found to abuse its virtual market monopoly and hinder its competitors.
A lack of fair competition always works to the detriment of the consumer - that’s you and me. Because it forced users to use its own software, Microsoft had no incentive to improve such software or fix the many problems inherent in the software.
The simple fact of the matter is that Microsoft knowingly flouted fair business and monopoly laws for its own benifit, and must therefore pay the consequences.
