Ok so I was talking to Tibault about this exact thing yesterday after reading his post on Google Talk. As a matter of fact, I was talking to him on Google Talk about this topic. The topic, of course, is how Google Talk can be used as a VOIP software – according to Tibault they are working with another VOIP software to improve the communications in their new application. As a matter of fact, I even saw a whole news report about Google Talk! I was really not impressed with the BBC for broadcasting that report now because Skype has been availiable for more then a year and its not had any reports – the day Google releases its IM software it gets a whole news report, whats that about!?
Okay this whole thing about Google and Skype has been clarified interestingly on Vibe of the Tribe, a report I was reading this morning;
We recently have heard through the grapevine that the 3 billion dollar (US) offer from News Corp. was not enough money to convince the wonder twins over at Skype, Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis, to sell. This is not just about money for Niklas and Janus. There must be a passion for technology. Look at Kazaa. Illegal file sharing is a hard business to make money at. At this point it seems that any way they go, Niklas and Janus stand to make a boat load of money when Skype hits the market, but they will do it the way they want.
Now step in the super boys, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, of Google. Google does not have a great VoIP and Instant Message option. Jabber is fine, but it is no Skype. Technology-wise Skype fits into Google’s plans very well. A closed sourced open API environment that really just works. Look at Google maps. Look at AdSense and AdWords. They just work and on any platform, much like Skype.
Basically this is saying that, from my point of view at least, Google is trying to buy everyone out to have the super-software out there. Skype, however, is owned by people who miraculously aren’t conviced by Google’s offers of money because they are truely dedicated to the cause of their own made software. I think there is something to be respected about that because its not often we get people being so dedicated to developing a software which isn’t based on making masses of money. Either way, the article concludes, Skype is going to make money weather they sell to Google or not – therefore they are doing it the way they want to.
I don’t want Skype to sell out, I prefer it over any other VOIP software other then the fact that you have to pay relatively decent amounts for calling and other additions such as having a personal number and voicemail, it is by far the most advanced and attractive of the softwares – and the only one that works on my PDA, Mac and PC!!
//Edit
I just read this on Macworld;
Skype opens IM service to third parties
Skype Technologies is making its presence and instant messaging (IM) technologies available to all developers wanting to integrate them into their websites or applications.
The announcement comes as Google also announced plans to offer an IM service with voice communications, muscling in on Skype’s territory.
As part of its program to help build new types of Web-based communication services, Skype is opening up its SkypeNet and SkypeWeb APIs (application programming interfaces) to developers worldwide, the company said.
As you can see the situation between Google and Skype is definately related, and there is something coming that may be quite surprising!
To clarify what I meant with that: As soon as it’s integrated, you’ll be able to call people not only on the GoogleTalk network, but also on other (supported) networks. At this point that are EarthLink’s Vling service and Sipphone’s Gizmo Project.
I believe this is a necessary function as you can call to different networks with a normal phone too.
You can read more about this here: http://www.google.com/talk/developer.html#service
Thanks for clarifying that Tibault, I wasn’t completely sure so I didn’t write specifics. I’ll leave that to you
Basically my point was that there are some major advances in the VOIP world which is generating quite an interesting audience in the major markets of the technological world!
