My Crazy Cycle!

Peace be with you

Haven’t written on here for ages. Why? Because I’ve been training for my 60 mile cycle from London to Oxford! Why? Because I want to do what I can to help orphans in Bangladesh!

Okay, well theoretically that’s true. I think I’ve done my psychological training than physical, but hey, I’m doing the cycle next Sunday so wish me luck! Actually, wait, there was something else I wanted to ask for…Oh yea, please sponsor me too!

Revise

Exams. Ouch I hate that word. Yeah I ~~won’t~~ shouldn’t be writing much because I ~~will~~ should be revising for my GCSE examinations which are rapidly descending on me (end of May!). Detesting revision, or school in general, doesn’t really help with it either – hence the MSN Nickname: “I have never let my schooling interfere with my education.” – Mark Twain

Brief update because I hate seeing my website with the same posts for too long, I watched 30 days: Minimum Wage with Morgan Spurlock yesterday. It’s good to see that (some) people are (finally) opening their eyes to the situation in what are said to be ‘rich countries’. Funny that we are yet to see 30 Days: Living poverty. Perhaps he wouldn’t actually live through that one? I think it’s really good that someone is actually going out of their way to prove to the world that look – we are actually too selfish. Whilst we are living our lives in our mansions and whatever, people are out there (like literally out the door) barely making it on a day to day basis. In general what I’ve seen of Morgan Spurlock’s programs I have been impressed. There is an average American who isn’t just making a single point, he’s attacking society in the places which desperately need to be consulted, and he’s doing it using the most powerful tools – the media. I’ve also seen 30 Days: McDonald’s and that was (almost) shocking. In all honesty what amazes me most is how people (in general) hear, watch, see these things and yet refuse to act on it. “We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light.” – Plato

On another front, went bike riding with some friends today and that was nice. Whoever said you can’t cycle through a public footpath on a golf course? Specifically, we purposely got lost and had a fun time speeding down dirt tracks (all public footpaths) and then we end up at some golf club. The sign says public footpath so we start going down it and some woman who is just playing golf i.e. she has no power to do anything, comes up to us and says you can’t come down here. She points in some random direction and says the ‘public’ footpath is thatta way. Excuse my randomness but come on! Also sorry about the overuse in brackets, just a phase. Oh no. This sounds like a BLOG now!

Update: I just watched Loose Change 2nd Edition, if you want to know the truth about what happend on 911, I highly recommend it. Oh and its sunny outside (in Manchester!)

South Asia Quake

I’m sure you will have heared about the huge earthquake that hit Pakistan on Saturday. For those of you who are unclear, Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistani Kashmir, was the epicentre of the quake which killed at least 20,000 people (though this figure is expected to rise).
My children have survived the quake but it looks like they are going to die of cold now .
The disaster wiped out a generation of young people in the areas worst hit, a military official has said. The earthquake, which hit at 0350GMT on Saturday, is thought to have been the strongest the region has seen in a century. Some reports suggest the death toll may double. The toll is also rising in Indian-administered Kashmir, where officials say 950 people have died. BBC.

May thoughts and prayers are with those who have suffered from this trajedy.

South Korean Scientists Clone First Dog

South Korea’s pioneering stem cell scientist has cloned a dog, smashing another biological barrier and reigniting a fierce ethical debate — while producing a perky, lovable puppy.

Here we go again!

Yep another ethically debatable topic which has been thrown around the world with the first cloned animal (i think), was that ‘Dolly’. Okay thats wrong I just found this:

Dolly the sheep may have been the world’s most famous clone, but she was not the first. Cloning creates a genetically identical copy of an animal or plant. Many animals – including frogs, mice, sheep, and cows – had been cloned before Dolly. Plants are often cloned – when you take a cutting, you are producing a clone. Human identical twins are also clones.

Anyways leaving that aside, the question is – Is animal cloning okay, especially as it is leading towards the idea of Human Cloning! Well my opinion is my opinion but its somthing to think about…

The researchers, led by Hwang Woo-suk, insist they cloned an Afghan hound, a resplendent supermodel in a world of mutts, only to help investigate human disease, including the possibility of cloning stem cells for treatment purposes.

But others immediately renewed calls for a global ban on human reproductive cloning before the technology moves any farther.

"Successful cloning of an increasing number of species confirms the general impression that it would be possible to clone any mammalian species, including humans," said Ian Wilmut, a reproductive biologist at the University of Edinburgh who produced the first cloned mammal, Dolly the sheep, from an adult cell nearly a decade ago.
